Dr. Ashraf Aboulnaga is the Research Director at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). His research and expertise lie in the fields of cloud computing, databases, with a current focus on graph processing and cloud database systems, data management, and social computing, deriving from social media analysis for use in policy and decision-making, poverty mapping, and disaster relief.
Dr. Aboulnaga serves on the editorial boards of the VLDB Journal, the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and the Distributed and Parallel Databases journal. He is an IEEE Senior Member and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.
Prior to joining QCRI, Dr. Aboulnaga was an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo and a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He has received multiple awards, including a Google Research Award, the Ontario Early Research Award, and Best Paper Awards at the VLDB 2011 and SoCC 2015 conferences.
Dr. Aboulnaga obtained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Alexandria University, all in computer science.
