Ibtihaj Muhammad joined the US fencing team in 2010 and participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, becoming the first Muslim-American female athlete to win an Olympic medal. The first US athlete to compete at the Olympic Games in a hijab, Muhammad has become a sporting icon in her home country. As well as being Nike’s main ambassador for the launch of the “Nike Pro Hijab,” Muhammad has written and published a book entitled *Proud*, in which she depicts her challenges as a Muslim-American and her successes with the US fencing Olympic team.
