Weaponization of social media, platform liability, social media and its impact on news outlets
Marc Owen Jones is an academic specialized in disinformation, propaganda and digital humanities in Arabic social media. Driven by issues of social justice and a specific interest in the Arabian Gulf, his research spans a number of topics, from historical revisionism to postcolonialism. At the moment, he is working on a number of research areas, including propaganda and Twitter bots, and mapping sectarian hate speech.
Jones is considered a commentator and writer on Bahraini and Gulf affairs, having written for outlets such as CNN, New Statesman, The Washington Post and The Independent. He is the upcoming author of ‘Political Repression in Bahrain’ published by Cambridge University Press, and is the co-Editor of ‘Bahrain's Uprising’ by Zed Books and ‘Gulfization of the Arab World’ by Gerlach Press. He
Jones has a PhD from Durham University and is a former lecturer at the University of Exeter.
